OSHAWA, Ont. - The Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce that Rachel Plancke and Ryan Nickerson have been named the recipients of the Annabelle Stephens Memorial Athletic Scholarship for the 2020-21 academic school year.“Rachel and Ryan exemplify what the Annabelle Stephens Memorial Athletic Scholarship is all about,” said LeeAnn Wilson, a member of the scholarship selection committee. “Having so much success in the classroom, playing sports while finding time to give back to the community is not an easy feat. They should be so proud of what they accomplished heading into their university careers.”The Annabelle Stephens Memorial Athletic Scholarship is intended to assist a competing athlete who is balancing the demands of post-secondary education and the demands of training.Plancke, a graduate of R.S. McLaughlin, is currently studying commerce at Ontario Tech University. At high school, she played basketball, volleyball, lacrosse and soccer. While playing four sports, she managed to finish on the honour roll while also finding time to volunteer in the community including coaching and refereeing with Stephen G. Saywell Public School.Nickerson graduated from Eastdale CVI and is in his first year at Western University studying Medical Science. Hockey has been a big part of his life having played AAA for Oshawa for 10 years and other sports including basketball and rugby, while wanting to pursue biology and chemistry to be a part of the medical community in the future.
